Hunger: A Tale of Courage
By Donna Jo Napoli

Two books about being hungry, one by choice, one by fate. In Hunger: A Tale of Courage, the author brings us back in time to the Irish Potato Famine and the struggle of the poor people of Ireland to find nourishment when their main food staple is gone. Lorraine’s story of hunger shows the perseverance  of the human spirit and the heartbreak of a people who lost everything.

In Hungry, the author has created a dystopian society where no one needs to eat anymore. That basic human function has been eradicated by taking nutritional supplements. No one needs to suffer from hunger anymore. Thalia has lived a life of privilege, but not everyone in her society is equal. Some people want to bring food back. Thalia meets a boy who shows her how blind she has been. When Thalia starts feeling hunger, she realizes she must do something to change her word for herself and others who are hungry.
